Cedar mulch has a lighter wood tone that some homeowners prefer around shrubs and trees. All wood mulch changes color as it weathers. That is part of the process, so the bed will look a little different later in the season than it did when the mulch was first spread.

Landscaping stones make more sense when you want a surface that will stay in place for a long time. Decorative stone can define a path, outline a bed, or cover an area where grass struggles to grow.
